Design Candy- Where the Wild Things Are

After searching around the other day for party ideas for Where the Wild Things Are I was inspired to find and create a sample board based on the art direction from the new film. I wanted to try and capture the different elements of the story by using texture and color. Specifically I wanted to find objects that represented Max’s crown, the wild things fur, and the forest.

Where The Wild Things Are Puppets

Where The Wild Things Are Puppets

And when he came to the place where the wild things are they roared their terrible roars and gnashed their terrible teeth and rolled their terrible eyes and showed their terrible claws.

This week we have been celebrating the release of Where The Wild Things Are. The Bird and I picked a copy of the book and then decided to make puppets to use while reading the story. To make a Wild Thing puppet you will need:

  1. Brown Paper Lunch Bags
  2. Construction Paper
  3. White School Glue
  4. Scissors
  5. Markers
  6. Cupcake Liners
  7. Large Googly Eyes

First cut out your big and small shapes – we started with the fur, for around their faces. Then we worked on the horns, the stripes for his shirt, his nose and teeth, and finally, the tail. When everything is cut out, then glue all of the shapes, googly eyes, and cupcake liners to the bag. The cupcake liners we used for scales, and if you have the small ones, they’re fine as is. You can also just cut out some circles instead of the cupcake liners.

The fun thing with these puppets is that they’re monsters, so they’re not SUPPOSED to be perfect: claws, fangs, horns, fur and other bits can be placed wherever to make them unique.

After our puppets were complete, it was time for a puppet show. We used a baby gate, and blanket to create out stage. Here’s The Bird’s presentation of “Where the Wild Things Are”.

Here’s a look at all the steps and some of the fun we had making them.

Where The Wild Things Are Party Ideas

Where The Wild Things Are Party Ideas

In anticipation for the upcoming release of Where the Wild Things Are (due out in theaters October 16th) I have found several ideas that would make for great Halloween, fall or birthday party ideas. How fun would it be to bring the pages of Maurice Sendak’s children’s classic to life. To refresh your memory, Max the main character gets sent to his room for being naughty and then starts to imagine that his room is a forest, where wild things live. The story and illustrations are so inspiring I can’t wait to see how Spike Jones will interpret the pages and turn them into full length feature film.  Invite your guests with these adorable digital invitations on Esty at Digipixels storefront, that you can customize yourself.

Attendees of the party could wear a gold crown as Max did after being crowned King. Make this one out of gold poster board from Micheal’s.

foit02_wild_thingsFor decorations white Christmas lights and candles paired with natural birch branches, raffia and moss will pull together a forest look.

And my favorite find was a custom wild thing cake found on Flickr.

For party favors brown paper bags with these cute tags, a necklace, or journals would make any wild thing happy.

Back By Popular Demand- Book of Colors

Back By Popular Demand- Book of Colors

I woke up this morning with several comments in my in box about a post I made from December 30, 2008. It was a book of colors, The Bird and I made with lunch bags, construction paper and magazine clippings. This was the first documented project I posted after getting the site as a Christmas present from Slade. The project is still popular here at the house and one that we still seem to be making every so often. I wanted to thank The Crafty Crow for putting a link once again to my site and sending me my “Featured On ” button that now graces the side bar of Hearthstone House. It was a great treat to read all the comments and makes me feel happy to know that other people were inspired by our crafting. Thanks again!

House Beautiful at ADAC

On Thursday this week, I was invited to attend House Beautiful’s Color Institute at the Atlanta Decorative Arts Center (ADAC). The event was open to local interior designers and magazine subscribers and the day was devoted to discussions on color trends, historical aspects of color and whats next. I wanted to share some of my findings with you and give you a sneak peak for 2010.

Interior Design Color Preview for 2009-2010

Another aspect of color and design is always looking to the past to reinvent colors for the future. One discussion I enjoyed and found compelling was the idea of classicism. If it worked in centuries past, it will work today. Historical colors, design forms and design movements are always in style and can be interchanged using the principles of scale, balance, and proportion. For example a Coco Chanel jacket from the 1920’s was an instant classic back then and today the same jacket is just as relevant with skinny jeans, ballet flats and a menswear tank.

The same idea can be applied to interior design. If we take a look at a historical Louis XV oval back chair and then look at a contemporary version we see that the same form is there, it just has an updated look.

4th Annual Bird Day

4th Annual Bird Day

Sunday marked the 4th birthday for The Bird and as usual Hearthstone House did our best to celebrate the milestone in a special way. Slade and I decorated the upstairs hallway Saturday night and when she woke up on Sunday she was very excited and surprised. The Bird asked for a Hello Kitty cake and we decided to take her to a fancy dinner out at Benihana, a Japanese Hibachi Steakhouse. She really enjoyed watching her meal being cooked at her table and she kept on saying how wonderful the food was.  She also loved the rice and using chopsticks for the first time. Here are some images of the festivities.

The End of Summer

The End of Summer

This weekend marks the end of summer, but for Hearthstone House the fall brings change in the best sense. We started summer with the worst news and finally end with the best news.  We are blessed and relieved to say that Slade has triumphed over every obstacle and has landed a job at a large media conglomerate here in town. We are so happy and praise God for His provision and His strength to get us through this time. The summer of 2009 will not be forgotten for this reason and for countless others. Little Meebs took her first steps, grew shoots (AKA Pigtails)  and saw the ocean for the first time. The Bird learned how to dribble a basketball, play go fish and grew into her position as Big Sister. I am so grateful for my life, its hard times and its treasures. I would not change a day of Summer 2009. Here are some more highlights.
